Chefs in Covid 19 Crisis

First of all I would like to make a special mention thanking all the people who are working actively and passively fighting to get out of these uncertain times and drama that we have had to live.

Also remember the loved ones who have left us on the path of this struggle, sending a big hug to all the families of all affected. But today I am going to talk  about how Chefs and catering industry are living, in which I include myself, this time of confinement and state of emergency.

Life away from the kitchen?

In most cases, our lives have undergone a major change. We have suddenly interrupted a professional career with long working hours, little rest, and high daily stress to ensure the highest quality of service to our customers.

Well now, most chefs, although it is paradoxical, are breathing, and with all the respect in the world for the current situation and economical hardships, we have come out of our confinement at work. We have free weekends again, recovered contacts from neglected friends, even recovered past hobbies.

All this is the consequence of an industry that demands a lot from its worker, but that does not allow for a good quality of life in most cases, as in many other sectors of society. Whether it is due to the contract modality, or to the seasonal nature of tourism in each country. For many chefs it is difficult to have economic stability and a decent balance between personal and work life.

Reinventing itself

After this small criticism, we are going to talk about how chefs are reinventing themselves to face this uncertain future that the covid 19 pandemic has left.
Thanks to new technologies, today we can have contact with the people we love at all times. But we can also have our own profesional showcase to the world through social networks. Well this is one of the things chefs are doing these days.

#cookingathome #cookathome are one of the most popular # on Instagram, where professional chefs and gastronomy lovers teach their community their best recipes by showing videos of how they cook without the daily stress of a profesional kitchen. This is also serving as therapy for those of us who need to be in contact with the stove daily, like an athlete doing sports.

Chefs Youtubers

Among the chefs who have taken this path, we find our friend and colleague, Alejandro Millán, whom we have interviewed. Alejandro has seen his life changed in the last year for various reasons, becoming one of trending youtubers of the moment in Spain, with his own cooking channel LALEONERAYOUTUBER. The value of his traditional recipes and his sense of humor have been one of the keys to the success of this kitchen channel.

Solidarity kitchens

Other options that our chefs have taken is to join solidarity kitchens. So today, we are talking about Chef Jose Andres, and his project WORLD CENTRAL KITCHEN. The Spanish chef has created a world organization to help the most disadvantaged in time of crisis. This initiative began in America, the country of residence of chef José Andrés, spreading to many important cities in the world such as Madrid, Yokohama (Japan), Las Bahamas ...

This organization is feeding more than 20,000 people daily throughout the planet.

The already famous organization makes all colleagues by profession proud, as it is a very important social work promoted by one of us. The chefs family.

Will Industry change?

We also have to think about how our industry will change from here on out. Perhaps we will be the sector that undergoes the most transformations since the food is a delicate issue for public health.

Restaurants have begun to modify their dining rooms to adopt new measures that are gradually being announced by the government of each country, for example the placement of separating partitions on the tables or reduction of capacity. In any case, we will have to wait for new information in the coming days.

Faced with this hopeless panorama, many chefs and also restaurants have begun to consider the future in a different way thinking of offering their services at home.

The extension of home delivery service to many restaurants that previously did not have it, can be a good action to regain the sales rhythm lost during the crisis.

Also noteworthy is the boom in food delivery companies such as GloVo, Deliveroo, Just Eat… .this type of company liaises between the restaurant and the customer, making it possible for most restaurants to have a delivery service to home.

Finally we have to mention the rise of the demand of Private Chefs.

If there are no restaurants working, we will have to go to our clients' houses.

In my opinion, I think that the Private Chef service is going to have a considerable boom, it is already happening in some places. There are many people who need someone to make them breakfast, lunch and dinner, for whatever reason. Also the fear of people for crowded public places, such as a festive Sunday lunch in a restaurant with a large capacity in which you are literally almost side by side with the table next to you. Many people will prefer to do this type of celebration at home to avoid possible contagions. This generalized fear of contagion will hopefully gradually disappear in our society, but a return to the life as we knew it will not be as easy.

Enjoying a meal with family or friends at home from a professional chef is something that will become increasingly relevant. If you think about it, It could become our new normal at least for the time being. So friends, colleagues, I know that the situation is not ideal, but I encourage you to do what many of us are already doing.

Think about the future and renew yourself!
